Panasonic S1H: The King of Mirrorless Video

Just recently Panasonic has announced the Panasonic S1H, there take on the ultimate mirrorless video camera today’s money can buy. And it is definitely going to delight you if you are out in the market looking for the best Video experience today. With the S1H Panasonic has completely silenced all major competition, from Sony to Canon and Nikon, when it comes to quality video shooting. Built for those with heavy pockets, the camera sure can do some wonders if you are looking for the best in class.

Features:

Let’s come down to the main deal. The Panasonic S1H features a full-frame 24.2 CMOS sensor, built-in with a Venus Engine. The Camera has been fully optimized for high sensitivity and quality, giving 14 stops of dynamic range in pictures. Thanks to its Multi-pixel Luminance generation it is able to produce a higher resolution. Color control helps in color reproduction in the shadows and highlights. The Venus engine does a superb job at suppressing noise throughout the ISO range, which stretches from ISO 100-51200. You also have the power of continuous shooting at speeds up to 9fps with AF-S or 6 fps with AF-C, for up to 60 raw files.

Video:

This is what the Panasonic S1H is all about. The S1H is unrivaled in its ability to shoot 6K (5952 x 3968) 10-bit video at 24 fps in a 3:2 aspect ratio. The camera makes use of the entire area of the sensor. You also can shoot 5.9K at 27 fps on a 16:9 aspect ratio. 4K video is available in both DCI and UHD up to 30 fps with 10 bit 4:2:2 sampling capabilities internally. When using the Super 35mm area you can get 60 fps of frame rates. Some other resolutions include Full HD 1080p with a max fps of 120 and Anamorphic 4K with 48 fps.

The Panasonic S1H draws a great deal of inspiration from their broadcast line of cameras. Dual native ISO is a result of that. This gives it the ability to have low noise along with higher sensitivity for working in a wide range of conditions. There are separate circuits for each pixel, a low noise circuit, and a low ISO circuit.

Image Stabilization:

The Panasonic S1H has Dual image stabilization 2 to achieve maximum sharpness in handheld work. This makes use of the cameras 6 stop 5 axis sensor-shift image stabilization along with the lens based 2 axis image stabilization for compensating a much broader range of movement. This does require using compatible Lumix lenses that have optical image stabilization. The result is that you get a total of 6.5 stops of image stabilization.

Autofocus:

The Autofocus on the Panasonic S1H makes use of Depth From Defocus (DFD) technology. This can quickly calculate the subject’s distance and adjust focus all in 0.08 seconds. The sensor and lens can communicate at an impressive 480 fps. Benefitting both photo and video the contrast detection focus can quickly lock on to fast-moving objects making use of Advanced AI to figure out the subject type, color, and size. Face and eye detection work perfectly in portraits to focus on the subject’s eye. Low light autofocus has become exceptional giving you accurate focus as low as -6 EV. Focus peaking is available to aid in manual focusing by highlighting which regions are in focus for quick and accurate focusing.

Body:

The Panasonic S1H has a Real View Finder with 5.76m dot OLED EVF that provides a 0.78x viewing magnification. The refresh rates are swift at 120 fps and 0.005 seconds of lag. On the back of the camera is a 3.2″ 2.33m-dot touchscreen LCD which is good for live view shooting as well as navigating through menus and settings. It has a tilting design so it can be flipped outside and adjusted or tilted along the lens axis. On top of the camera is a smaller 1.8″ 303 x 230-dot status LCD. This is used for a quick review of the major settings for shooting, even when the camera is turned off. The body is made sturdy with a weather sealing and magnesium alloy construction. This makes it splash and dust proof, so it is ready to tackle harsh conditions as you go along.
