Sigma has added new lenses to its already brilliant line up of prime and zoom lens 3 new models for the full frame mirrorless category. Part of the new division of Art and Contemporary series these lenses give full frame mirrorless camera owners some amazing options to look upon. These lenses are designed for Sony E mount and the Leica L mount. With the aim of delivering top notch performance in a less hefty budget than the Sony GM series or the Leica L series.
Sigma 14-24mm f/2.8 DG DN Art
With this super wide angle range the 14-24mm f/2.8 is designed to give you can already see the lens is made of landscape photography. The lens is sure to come in handy for some surreal shots in astrophotography. The super wide length can capture a lot of the night sky and the f/2.8 aperture is enough to capture the milky way. With the rear filter holder you can add in any filter and you are good to go.
Lots of measures have been taken to ensure the 14-24mm f/2.8 gives you mind-blowing quality. A newly designed Nano Porous Coating helps to remove any flares and provide contrast even with strong back-lighting. The optical construction consists of 18 elements in 13 groups that help reduce chromatic aberration and distortion.
Sigma 35mm f/1.2 DG DN Art
Sigmas second art lens is a wide angle 35mm f/1.2 which is their first f/1.2 aperture lens. This lens is a top performer when it comes to light sensitivity. Sigma has added auto focus capabilities alongside the aperture for no compromise on quality. The lens is therefore extremely big and heavy.
The 35mm f/1.2 has an aperture ring which can be adjusted to both automatic and manual, good for filmmakers. Moreover the ring has a declick feature to smoothly adjust aperture while filming. The focus ring is a similar case, since focusing accurately on f/1.2 can be a real challenge there is a hypersonic motor (HSM) to quickly adjust focus for you in autofocus mode. For correctly focusing in manual mode the lens makes use of a focus by wire system. In terms of optical construction, the lens is made of 17 elements in 12 groups. Taking advantage of the short flange distance the 35mm f/1.2 can comfortably resolve up to 50 million pixels!.
There is an AFL button on the lens which can be assigned various functions, a welcome feature for the 35mm. When it comes to the physical construction the lens is dust and splash proof. It also has a water and oil repellent coating on the front glass.
Sigma 45mm f/2.8 DG DN Contemporary
The final lens announced today the 45mm f/2.8. This lens is not designed for superior performance like the former two but is intended to be a more affordable and all round lens in the full frame market. Likewise it is not part of the high performing Art series but is a Contemporary lens
The glass is designed to be compact and lightweight, so extensive use does not wear you down. Nothing really fancy about the optical construction on the 45mm f/2.8 either, just 8 elements in 7 groups and a 7 blade aperture diaphragm. The minimum focus distance on this lens however is just 24cm. So this can be used for a wide variety of purposes, again the focus on versatility. On the physical end the lens does have a dust and splash proof structure for better handling outdoors.
With Sigma moving in to the full frame mirrorless category, we can be sure they have more options under development.
