A camera lens is the main part of the whole camera. There are many different lenses for different use. We have a wide lens for clicking wide-angle pictures whereas we also can get a macro lens to click close-ups of different objects. There are portrait lenses for taking good portrait shots and normal lens to click normal pictures. Some types of lense are wide-angle, standard, short telephoto, medium telephoto, etc.
The focal length of a lens is calculated in mm, a higher number in mm of a lens means that it can zoom more. The lower number means that it can take wide-angle shots which would not be possible on other lenses. On a higher number of lenses, higher than 50mm means that the focus will be on a smaller aspect of the view.
Every camera has its own sets of lenses, which means a canon lens would be different than that of a sony camera lens. The lens is the main component of a camera, if you have good quality and better lens then you could take a better picture automatically.
