Necessary Equipment to Make your Food Photography Yummy!

Photography is one of the hobbies that is boomed nowadays. People do landscape photography, portrait photography, wedding photography, product photography and food photography. Each one of those photographers have their own expertise regarding photography.

Today, we will learn about the gears for food photography. Though, those will not be different from other photography equipment but, still food photography requires different types of lenses.

Camera Model

The camera plays an important role in photography. Therefore, you need to have a full-frame camera for professional photography, else you can use a point and shoot camera as a hobbyist. You can go for cropped sensor DSLRs too. If we talk about photography professionally, you must choose Canon 5D Mark III. It is one of the latest cameras in full frame that gives excellent quality of images.

Lenses to Buy

You must have seen different zoom in, zoom out shots and sometimes close-ups. Most of the portraits are taken from prime lenses. Prime lenses have fixed focal length. They do not zoom in or zoom out. In fact, the person needs to go forward and backward to have a good focal length.

Prime lenses are better in use whatever type of photography you do. They are good because, they have fixed focal length and so the aperture works perfect with them. You should have 50mm f/1.4 or 35mm f/1.8 or 1.4 (whichever is in your budget). You can use zoom lenses as well but, with good aperture. You can buy Canon 17-40mm or Nikon 16-35mm.

Macro lenses are also known for food photography. Macro lenses make the object size look bigger. So, if you are capturing small object related to food or you want to show it bigger than all other objects around it, you can simply use Canon 100mm which has Image Stabilizer that will make your object clear, else usually the image gets blurry with macro lenses.

Lighting is also an important gear of photography. A professional photographer needs to have flash guns, strobes and LED lights you can say. Though, natural light is the best but, sometimes it is good to play with lights on your own. You can use Canon 600 EX-RT or Nikon SB 910. If you want to shoot a video of your food photography, you should go for Lowel Tota. This equipment is good in the night for taking classy images of dishes. It should be used in less crowded area. You can also use monoblock for larger sets where a lot of light is required.

There are several ways to diffuse the unwanted light. Using large lighting modifiers you can soften the light. You must have 36×48 softbox to have a good soft light in which you can shoot. For portable lighting, you can buy Wescott 43” Apollo Orb which is light weight and reflects inside the silver lining without the help of any diffuser.

 Supplementary Gears

There are few more types of equipment that can be useful for food photography. Let’s have a look at those gears:

Tripod is helpful to get sharp images. You need to have a strong tripod. The best tripods’ models are Induro Alloy 8M AT 214 and a Manfrotto 055 Head. These two are excellent for food photography. If you are making an unusual angle, you can attach Manfrotto 131D Side Arm with your tripod that helps to keep the camera in a difficult position for longer period of time.

Remote Release

A remote release helps you to move you camera in all the directions without you being at the back of your camera to take a photo.

Photography Software

No matter how good are you at photography, still you need to do editing. You can buy Adobe Photoshop editing software for your photo editing.

Before doing photography, you might have most of the gear with you. Here are few tips for food photography and you can use them in most of the photography types.

  • You must not use built in flash. The built in flash will ruin your image.

  • You must take one type of image from different angles. You can change the position of the object with your movement.

  • Make your background clear. If you find some cutlery item disturbing or blocking the object, you can simply crop that from the frame.

You do not have to worry about learning photography because, it all depends on your experience and practice time you will give to that.
